How LCMB project managed National Express transition to Zero emission fleet

National Express reached out to LCMB’s project managers for specialist help to define the requirements, develop the new depot and manage the design, construction and fit out works.

National Express West Midlands, part of the Mobico Group, is the biggest bus operator in the West Midlands and one of the largest in the UK, running over 1400 buses from several depots in and around Birmingham, Coventry, and the Black Country.

Working collaboratively with Birmingham City Council to support the legacy vision for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the need to relocate the existing Perry Barr bus depot was identified.

To define the scope of this delivery project, National Express reached out to LCMB’s project managers for specialist help to define the requirements, develop the new depot and manage the design, construction and fit out works. This involved project management of multiple stakeholder management and clear collaboration and communication throughout, to ensure that the project was delivered on time, on budget.

“I had the pleasure of working with LCMB during the development of our Perry Barr Bus Depot. The depot was carefully designed to be future-proof for our transition to an all-electric vehicle (EV) fleet. The team at LCMB led the construction project from design to handover and were dedicated, professional and exceeded our expectations. Communication was clear throughout and the project was completed on target. We look forward to future collaborations and highly recommend LCMB as a reliable partner for any businesses seeking help and expertise in the built environment."

Business challenges

  • The 50-year-old Perry Barr bus depot, located within the Commonwealth Games legacy area, needed redevelopment to support modern operations and zero-emission vehicles.
  • National Express appointed LCMB as project managers to define requirements, develop the new depot, and oversee construction and fit-out.
  • A key objective was to create a world-class facility that recognised the diverse needs of NX’s teams, enabling more efficient working practices and supporting long-term sustainability goals.

LCMB solution

  • This was a challenging project that was both complex, ambitious and involved multiple stakeholders.
  • As well as the enormous task of transitioning to a zero-emission fleet, LCMB’s project management team also faced with the challenge of an ageing building, stock building capacity constraints and the requirement to relocate the existing Perry Bar depot.

Benefits

As Project Managers, LCMB worked collaboratively with the National Express stakeholder teams to develop a scheme that met key objectives, focusing on future-proofing the depot for a zero-emission fleet while supporting current operations and vehicles.

  • Sustainability was central to the depot’s design, with additional measures including a wilderness meadow, green roof, solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and water recycling for the bus wash system.
  • The site operates without a gas supply, with heating and cooling provided by air-source heat pumps.
  • Environmental benefits were also prioritised in the construction process.
  • LCMB’s carefully planned approach ensured no materials were moved off-site, preventing over 50,000 heavy goods vehicle movements.
