King’s College London partnered with LCMB on a number of sustainability and facilities management projects across their building estate, to deliver both an optimised staff and student experience, and sustainable energy savings.
King’s College London is one of England’s oldest and most prestigious Universities, and offers world-leading research, teaching, and education.
With over 33,000 students across multiple campuses in central London, the King’s College estate is complex and dynamic.
Faced with having to tackle legacy estate issues whilst ensuring sustainable growth, King’s College London partnered with LCMB to deliver a number of facilities projects that would help to modernise the estate to make it more efficient, economical, and environmentally sustainable.
LCMB have had the privilege of working with King’s College London over the last 15 years on a number of estate projects ranging from restructuring and modernising facilities and managing third party support, to support on energy conservation and carbon management and planning.
Across all the projects, LCMB had to overcome a number of challenges that a complex historical estate presents. Legacy facilities such as outdated heating systems and ventilation coupled with building accessibility for example, meant that every recommendation for improvement and change had to be well considered for suitability, costs, and expected savings against target.
Being able to measure and report verified data and financial results on an ongoing basis was also key in allowing King’s College London to make decisions on what projects should be a priority and which would return optimal results.
It was also imperative that all projects delivered an improved student and staff experience and was in line with helping to achieve King’s Vision 2029 which sets out the ambition to make the world a better place, building on strong foundations of sustainable excellence.
The scale and complexity of the projects has meant that the LCMB team have worked alongside key stakeholders at King’s College London to form a united team who work together to keep projects on track and deliver the required targets.
These projects have resulted in helping King’s College London improve building performance with modernised solutions, progress towards decarbonisation targets and generally help them make better use of their building estate.
